Margaret Mead said that the mark of civilization is when we offer compassionate care to someone in health distress. Once there was evidence of compassionate care a line was crossed to mark the evolution of humanity.

Rebecca Solnit seconds this understanding of human civilization. In A Paradise Built in Hell  she documents how many, if not at all times in disasters there is a groundswell of humanitarianism. She says that  “every corner of suffering and lack is scoured by generosity” by average people who often have to work around the authorities who try too hard to control the circumstances, overlooking the natural willingness to help that is often structured and intelligent.

Now is a good time to remember that compassionate care is natural to civilization. We have the capacity to be of real service to one another.
